All signs point to Jesus: A journey through the book of Matthew week 8, chapter 11

CHAPTER 11 In this chapter, we get a glimpse of doubt from an unsuspecting person. We get more insight into who this Jesus is.  There is also an invitation.  Questions for Chapter 11 Why would John have doubts about Jesus being the Messiah? What warning does this passage give to us if we attend church frequently but refuse to really repent and believe? (v.20-24) What is the yoke Jesus is talking about? Let’s face it, life is hard. And even harder for a Christian I think. We live in a world surrounded by sin and unbelief.   We can be walking tall in our faith one day, then low with doubts the next.  Even John the Baptist had doubts, while he was in prison  or some might say he had a temporary lapse of faith (v.3).  Jesus reminds him of the prophecies fulfilled and preached to the poor. (v.5)  Where does doubt originate?  The believer’s bible commentary dissects this anatomy of doubt which reveals:  difficult situations, unmet expectatio...

All signs point to Jesus: A journey through the book of Matthew, week 7, chapter 10.

Questions for chapter 10 What was the purpose of this mission? Why did Jesus limit their ministry to Jews alone at that time? Jesus warns the 12 of the persecution they will face. When did this persecution begin? Whom did Jesus direct His disciples to fear instead of their enemies? What would it mean to love father, mother, son, or daughter more than Jesus? Why did Jesus end His sermon to the disciples with these words? (10:40-42)  My commentary The last chapter 9 seems to flow into chapter 10 in verses 35-38.  Jesus reveals the need or the why so to speak before he sends out his disciples.  He had true compassion for these people he was teaching and healing.  These people needed a Shepard.  And there were lots of them.   Notice, Jesus first calls them to pray before he summons to go.  Then in chapter 10, Jesus sends out disciples to continue or participate in the good work that he started showing that Jesus is truly the Christ, King of Israel....

WEEK 6 Matthew chapter 8-9 questions.  Read and answer the questions on your own first.  The questions are meant to understand the content.  Again, I’ve written a small commentary that addresses the theme of this devotion, all signs point to Jesus. Then, I placed the  answers  to the questions.  Why did Jesus command the healed man not to tell anyone what He had done? (v. 1-4)  What did the centurion mean when he spoke about the commands he received from his superiors and those he gave to his soldiers? (v.5-13) What is indicated by the phrase, “He cast out the spirits with a word” (v. 16)? Why does it look like Jesus was discouraging these two from following Him? (18-22) How does the fear of the disciples reveal the ferocity of this storm? (23-27)  Why did the people of this Gentile city ask Jesus to leave? (28-34) Chapter 9 How does this passage reflect Jesus’ claim to be the Son of God? (1-8) How scandalous was it for Jesus to choose...

All signs point to Jesus: a Journey through the book of Matthew, week 5; the Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew chapters 5-7: The Sermon on the Mount. Questions for chapter 5-7  For this week, I’ve laid out some questions that I borrowed from the Concordia Publishing House bible study ( communication.cph.org )  I’ll leave the answers at the end, but please try and read first, then answer on your own before you  go through the answers at the end and  after my short but sweet commentary.  I also did it this way for an important teaching point. That  is to remember to read more than one commentary when you're doing a thorough Bible study. Don't just take my word for it, or your pastor's word or it for that matter.  I would even say to go on further and research where the author of that commentary got their resources.  For full disclosure,  I use at least 2 resources, 'Exalting Jesus in Matthew' by David Platt and 'Believers Bible commentary' by William McDonald.  So there now you know all my secrets. Oh also this way made it easier for...
